Philosophy of the Department

In the post-genome era it is now possible to sequence DNA at a speed unimagined even just a few years ago. The molecular structure of proteins can be determined more easily than ever before, and new methods allow us to observe their interactions even in the living cell. Understanding these molecules and their behavior is vital to discovering the causes of disease, and how we can restore health and prolong life. As we learn more about the forces between biological molecules it has become possible to design drugs rationally to target different diseases. Also we can develop new methods to breakdown biomass to create biofuel. This department studies biomolecules at the atomic and molecular level to discover fundamental principles of biology as well as advance applied science. New findings in pure research now quickly lead to new technology, which may in turn promote research. The Department of Medical Life Science is actively seeking solutions to major problems of society through technological development and fundamental research.
